the marine industry faces major changes
with new regulations to curb sulphur
emissions taking effect January 2020 the
global fleet will be confronted with a
variety of new fuels slashing sulfur
content from 3.5 to 0.5% means changing
the ways marine fuels are produced
resulting in a wider range of fuel
handling parameters than ever before
fluctuations in fuel density and
viscosity can have a great impact on the
efficiency of removing water and
catalytic fines cat fines are a serious
problem they are part of a waste stream
coming from the refineries these small
particles often much smaller than human
hair can cause very serious damage to
the engine and so can the ingress of
water keeping these things out of your
engine is absolutely crucial
a traditional purifier uses a gravity
disc to set the correct interface for
oil and water a water seal is set and
the discs stack is completely covered
with oil
an increase in density will cause the
liquid seal to break leading to loss of
functionality and significant oil losses
conversely a decrease in density will
push the interface into the disk stack
so that the purifiers full cleaning
capacity is no longer utilized
the levels of water and cat finds in the
cleaned oil will rise
increasing or decreasing viscosity will
have similar effects in a traditional
purifier without our cap although to a
lesser degree when the fuels viscosity
or density varies a manual change of the
gravity disk is needed to ensure stable
and efficient separation this requires a
system shutdown
and is a very time-consuming job for the
crew we will have a higher variety of
different fuels in the market in 2020
and we will have the same amount of cat
fans as we used to maybe even higher but
the good thing is our separators will be
able to take care of it because they
have the automatic function to adjust to
certain densities to certain viscosities
and remove the particles with Alfa Laval
Al Capp technology there is no need for
a gravity disc that has to be exchanged
for every fuel type al cap separators

monitors and removes both the water and
the sludge that builds up inside the
separator bowl high water content in the
fuel will trigger a water drain and
sludge build-up will trigger the water
transducer more quickly when the water
drainage occurs too frequently separated
discharge is triggered thanks to Al cap
optimal separation is unaffected by fuel
density and viscosity changes there is
no impact on the interface nor can a
loss of the liquid seal occur
independent of fuel properties an al cap
separator will provide consistent
superior separation performance without
any change in hardware
